Vladimir Putin had been due to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month. However, in a sign of growing Russian isolation on the world stage, an Indian government source said the meeting has now been abruptly cancelled.
The move to cancel the annual face-to-face meeting was taken after veiled threats by Vladimir Putin to use nuclear weapons in the Ukraine war, according to Bloomberg News.
Indian and Russian leaders have held face-to-face meetings every year for the past 21 years - except for 2020 due to Covid.
An Indian official told Bloomberg that a meeting with President Putin under the current circumstances would not help Prime Minister Modi's image.
The Indian PM, who has been a strong ally of Russia, appeared to first criticise his Russian counterpart publicly in September over his invasion of Ukraine.
Responding to Russia's threat of nuclear weapons, PM Modi said "today's era is not an era of war".
However, it marks the latest snub for President Putin, who was shunned by traditional ally Armenia last month after its leader asked France to chair peace talks with Azerbaijan instead of Russia.
In September, Kazakhstan's president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev implicitly criticised Russia's war in Ukraine in a break with its long-term ally.

IOW, India will be pursuing an India First foreign policy.
Very wise of them.
Comon it is a MSN fake news))..
You’d have to be dumb as a Ukrainian to believe this nonsense.
India has 80000 troops facing off with 80000 Chinese troops after China broke all agreements in 2020 and killed 20 Indian soldiers. India will NEVER partner with China.
Putin got China and India to back off from that confrontation by 30 kilometers, India prefers cheap Russian energy to US call centers.
Putin had absolutely nothing to do with it. Crack Indian troops of Tibetan origin surprised the inexperience Chinese conscripts by occupying the high ground and firing warning shots when they approached. This led to cessation of “hostilities” with China still occupying Indian territory in 3 other areas. Which is why there have been no top level talks between India and China for 30 months and when the Chinese Foreign Minister dropped in with 24 hrs notice, he was refused an audience with the Indian PM and not given VIP treatments but strict protocol. Xi and Modi only greeted each other at the SCO meeting. There were no bilateral talks like with everyone else.
