Mindy Kaling, writer and star of “The Office,” recently claimed that the bingeable sitcom couldn’t be made in today’s politically correct climate — because it’s “so inappropriate now.”
“The writers, who I’m still in touch with now, we always talk about how so much of that show we probably couldn’t make now,” Kaling, 43, said during a recent interview on “Good Morning America.”
“Tastes have changed, and honestly what offends people has changed so much now. I think that actually is one of the reasons the show is popular, because people feel like there’s something kind of fearlessness about it or taboo that it talks about,” the New York Times best-selling author added. On reflection, the show is guilty of comments that would not fly in 2022, including problematic jokes about characters’ various ethnicities and sexual orientations. Themes of workplace and sexual harassment, such as icky remarks made about Stanley Hudson’s (Leslie David Baker) young daughter, couldn’t be repeated for today’s audiences.

We went from casual fun and tolerance of the off color to tighter and tighter canceling by Karens, BLM and LGBTQ+ social media and entertainment censors.
Now an old TV show or movie may have a Cream of Wheat box on a shelf with Rastus holding out the bowl, or Aunt Jemima or even an Eskimo Pie (not Inuit) or Land O’Lakes butter with Mia on the package. And the movie Major League had the Cleveland Indians and Chief Wahoo, not the Guardians.
Here is the amazing story behind the Land O Lakes cover. The son of the Objibwe artist (US Navy veteran and an early Native American artist who designed and redesigned Mia 1928 ,1939 and again in 1954 wrote about this. He also worked with MGM and Disney and had fine art exhibited during his career.
The son, Robert DesJarlait, wrote in the Washington Post April 29, 2020:

Ruth Buffalo (D), for instance, told the Pioneer Press in St. Paul, Minn., that the Land O’Lakes image of Mia went “hand-in-hand with human and sex trafficking of our women and girls … by depicting Native women as sex objects.” Others similarly welcomed the company’s removal of the “butter maiden” as long overdue.
How did Mia go from being a demure Native American woman on a lakeshore to a sex object tied to the trafficking of native women?”
41 years ago, I was invited to my NCOIC’s quarters on July 4th. I was the only white guy in my 7 man section. His wife cooked the best soul food. When I asked for seconds on chitlins, she exclaimed “Lieutenant, I didn’t know you liked soul food!”
I said “oh yes ma’am, but for some reason, I feel like dancing!” While her jaw was hitting the floor, everyone else busted our laughing.” That’s how we rolled back then. I wouldn’t dare try that today.
I would like to know if China allows knee slapping satires about its leaders? And if Putin or Kim Jong-un or Prime Minister Kim Tok-hun in North Korea enjoy chuckles at their expense by late night comics and films portraying them?
More like Woody Allen as the hapless court jester who mimics Bob Hope but couldn’t get even a smile out of the king. “Here I am again playing the Palace.”

As soon as we heard about cancel culture a few years ago, I purchased several movies on CD (from Goodwill), just so that someone can view them, should they wish. Those two are among my stash.
I don’t think “A Fish Called Wanda” could be made today either.
Both are great, especially Blazing Saddles.

I never watched the series when it aired, but after my youngest son came back here to live in May, it was one of the series he binge watched in my living room. I half-listened to it as he went through the whole series, and I told him then, that the show wouldn’t have been able to be made in this day and age, because nobody has a sense of humor anymore. Even Monty Python’s John Cleese has previously stated that in today’s cancel culture, the comedy the group produced in the past, would never be allowed to air today. Too many snowflakes out there.
Yep. A real classic. I probably have at least a dozen movies that I figured they would cancel. I figure they would cancel “To Kill A Mockingbird” too. Love that movie. I think there are a lot of movies from before 2015 that would be on the chopping block.
