My family's construction company installed smoke detectors in the housing projects in Louisville, Ky. I saw only one white resident, and she had black kids. The rest were blacks. I had to go into each apartment to inspect the electrical work.

One lady opened her apartment and I had just started my explanation ("I'm here to inspect the installation of the smoke detector") when a young chubby black girl shows up with a 50 something short bald fat white guy in a cheap suit.

The woman started screaming at her. "Can't you see The Man is here!?" I explained I was just there to inspect the installation of the smoke detector.

She said, "Oh. Ok honey." Then to the couple she said, "you can go on in."

Visits to the hood are interesting.
Some places I would wear the company shirt and people would be looking.
I would say that I turn the power on, not off.
They would smile and walk away.
