Let’s be generous for a moment, and say that Putin was at least partially motivated by morality here.
That good deed pales in comparison with his starting a shooting war. In no way does it make Putin some sort of good guy overall.
And yes, I get that Ukraine is corrupt. And I also get that Russia has legitimate concerns about NATO expansion. But it was Putin’s tanks that crossed a sovereign border. Putin is a war criminal who doesn’t particularly like gay propaganda in his country.
