It's the boiling frog. Young Americans don't how good things once were, or could be again. They're comfortable with the decay, because everyone is comfortable with the familiar.
Ayn Rand's sister visited Rand in the 1960s or 1970s. Rand was eager to settle her sister into the U.S., but her sister didn't like America and returned to the Soviet Union. Rand lamented that if someone spends their whole life in slavery, they often prefer it to freedom.
