TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — An Oklahoma state lawmaker filed two bills in one week with opposing goals.
One bill filed by State Rep. Jim Olsen (R-District 2) would lower the age for buying and carrying guns to 18. The other would raise the age for receiving gender-affirming care to 21.
Rep. Olsen told NewsChannel 8 he’s a Constitutionalist. He claimed the Founding Fathers would want 18-year-olds to carry guns, but they wouldn’t feel the same about helping people change their biological sex.
“You have, in the Constitution, specifically enumerated, your right to keep and bear arms,” he explained. “If you were to ask the Founding Fathers, ‘Where is it in the Constitution that you can get gender reassignment surgery?’ I think they’d have had a very puzzled look on their faces.”
Olsen pointed out that 18-year-olds can serve in the military.
“They carry weapons and it usually turns out just fine,” he said.
So why should they on the streets? He thinks it would make people safer.
“We need to realize that the great majority of mass shootings occur in a gun-free zone,” he alleged. “If you took away the gun-free zones, you occasionally would have somebody that wants to do something like that, but they would be quickly neutralized by somebody that’s legally carrying their weapon.”
However, research published in 2022 by Columbia University found there were 62.5% fewer shootings in places that do not allow guns.
Regardless, Olsen introduced House Bill 1001, which would allow 18-year-olds to purchase handguns, as well as concealed or open carry all guns.
“It’s lowering it to allow 18-year-olds their appropriate Constitutional rights,” he asserted.
NewsChannel 8 asked Olsen why people should be allowed to carry a gun before they can change their gender identity.
“The purpose of it is to protect our children from genital mutilation,” he claimed. “A lot of the people in the schools are telling me that it’s kind of the cool thing these days to be transgender.”
The American Psychological Association says it’s not a trend. Its guidelines say if children have shown “a long history of gender nonconformity, psychologists may inform parents that the adolescent’s self-affirmed gender identity is most likely stable.”
The APA also says gender-questioning children are more likely to experience “suicidal ideation, self-injurious behaviors, and drug and alcohol abuse.”
But Olsen also authored House Bill 1011 this week, which would ban gender-affirming care – including reversible measures like hormone therapy and puberty blockers – for those under 21 years old.
“A woman cannot become a man,” Olson asserted. “The whole thing is so sadly tied into a real delusion.”
The APA says denying gender-affirming care “puts individuals at a significant risk of harm,” and young people denied that care are “more than twice as likely to report having attempted suicide.”
Olsen, however, thinks the practice does more harm than good.
“We have vulnerable young people who are being told by people that are either wicked, or confused, or a mixture of both, that this will fulfill them and make them happy,” he said. “And it won’t. And it’s causing a lot of harm.”
He suggested raising the age limit is not his ultimate goal.
“There are some things that are so harmful that they need to be outlawed,” he said. “We need to prevent surgeons from harming people.”
Both of Olsen’s bills will come to the floor during the State House’s 2023 session, which begins on Feb. 6.
Those aren’t “opposing goals.”
I’ve carried, owned a weapon since I was 10. Had a good moral upbringing though.
When we took them to school so we could hunt for meat on the walk home we had to leave them in the coat room though.
THOSE bills are BRILLIANT!
Can’t wait to follow the rants and ravings if liberals. Liberal tears, so sweet.
Excellent. “A good moral upbringing” is key. That’s why the democrazies gave God the boot. This is exactly the America the far left commie Rats want.
I’ve seen a lot of Democrat-sponsored legislation over the years that borders on insanity, but somehow the media never seems to use the word “controversial” when reporting on it.
In today’s lexicon, “controversial” means common sense.
Rather than have them rant, rave and cry, I would rather they grew up, had an epiphany and realize they are wrong.
