Looks like one car burst into flames and that fire then ignited the others. In looking at the pictures, the middle cars are burned evenly, while the outside cars are predominantly burned on the sides nearest to the middle cars.

Perhaps I read the article too fast but it seems odd that the article doesn't mention your above likely scenario.

Very likely scenario that one started it and the others went off because of their proximity.

The author is stretching it to the limit with this story line.
