Among the twisted academic and political tricks of the 20th century has been the proliferation of supposedly different systems of government, but all of these "different" systems have at their core the same principle: big, powerful and invasive government.
On a model which would cluster all these together, the opposing pole would be small, far less powerful and non-invasive government.

"Small, far less powerful and non-invasive government" is my understanding of what it is to be conservative, arrayed against the liberal, though neither term suffices.
