I went to school in the Happy Valley, as it’s called.
5 schools in the area: UMASS, Amherst, Hampshire College, Mt Holyoke and Smith College.
UMASS was the state school, liberal as hell, but that’s where a ton of first generation college kids went to school after their parents scratched and clawed to send their kid to college.
The other 4 are exactly what you’d expect from reading the article.
She’s a good looking woman, showing up at My Holyoke looking like that, her freshman year there must have been torture. And I’m sure her mother saw some beautiful, NYC debutante leave for college, only to come back looking like a homeless, dyke, as many of them did.
What was really funny though, even going back decades when I was in that area, was the hypocrisy of all the rich kids. Arrogant, elitist, snobby. Some looked like they came out of a magazine. Others looked homeless. But most of them walked around with Gold Cards and had drivers come pick them up on school breaks where they’d hop on daddy’s jet or first class to head home.
I briefly went out with a girl who went to Smith. This was 1990. She was a mess.
I went to Angelo State (Texas) in the mid 80s.. Was still conservative back then. Don’t know about now.
Having to come back home to the real world after living in the Happy Valley took a LOT of getting used to..
