Outgoing National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Dr. Anthony Fauci said Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation” that Republicans who “politicizing” him were “ridiculous.”

MARGARET BRENNAN: Since you’re retiring, do you think that will change what looked to be a really intense political firestorm aimed at you? There have been all these House Republican calls for investigations into the origins of COVID and saying they’re gonna bring you up to Capitol Hill. Do you think that wanes as you step down?
FAUCI: Well, I don’t think it’s gonna wane for me because they’re already saying, the Republicans, that had they won the Senate, they would be bringing me before the committee that Rand Paul would be- likely would be chairing. That’s not going to happen because the Senate is not in the Republican control. But the Republican House has said that they’re going to- and that’s fine with me.

As Chief Executive Officer, Trump had the ultimate power over Article 2 agencies and individuals. Trump is also responsible for elevating Fauci by appearing with him and acting in deference to Fauci.
Fauci did not invent gain of function research. The UK has been engaged in the activity at Imperial College. The US at the Univ of Wisconsin and UNC have been doing GoF research for over 20 years. There are many places in India doing this research. Not to mention Singapore. They don’t need NIH money. It’s not that money intensive an activity.
You guys need to get calibrated on all this. It did not require special super duper US funding for Covid to get generated. Cooking viruses is essentially trivial. There are Bionerds all over the world who treat it as the microbiology equivalent of writing iPhone apps. Creating viruses can be done on a kitchen table. China likely had this virus escape from a lab, but the lab didn’t have to be a super duper, super secure, super black-to-the-outside-world facility.

Is not that Fauci was an unknown. During the 1970s he publicly bloviated and irresponsibly exaggerated the threat from AIDS. So much so that ‘responsible Federal management (Aside: Yes, I see the humor in the statement!)’ should have fired or relegated to some federal warehouse basement. As a minimum it should have been enough to never allow him to be a public spokesman.

How did CDC & NIAID as federal agencies get themselves exempt from civil service conflict of interest laws?
