The Kurds are a western Iranic ethnic group that is mostly Sunni Muslim. So there is a religious difference with mostly Shiite Iran.
Kurds also speak Kurdish, a western Iranic Language.
The Kurdish homeland spans parts of Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran. After WW I and the breakup of the Ottoman Empire, the Kurds were promised their own country. However, when the borders were drawn, they didn’t get one. There has been trouble ever since.
