OTOH, I can’t see why Italian law enforcement would entrap a group of Ukrainian stooges the way the FBI arranged the Whitmer kidnapping plot.

Try harder. It almost certainly relates to Italian patriot Giorgia Meloni’s well deserved elevation to become Italy’s Prime Minister. She loves the Italian people and will NOT place their interests below Ukraine’s interests no matter how much pressure is put on her. She knows well the agenda of the Globalists and knows how to oppose it. They hate her!
I suspect Russia, or perhaps Wagner elements could do this. Or perhaps some Azov elements who were not liked in Ukraine for dishonorable behavior have moved to Italy for the winter, and to make a littly money on the side. Also if kicked out might be looking to muddy Ukraine’s reputation.
