Yep. The human need for "meaning" is powerful, particularly as we age.

The solution could be defined as "religion." Even people who say they are not religious (i.e., do not believe in the Judeo/Christian God) serve a god of some kind.

I have noticed through the years that my atheist friends believed in God however much they denied it. In fact, their lives seemed to be dominated by their powerful denial of Him.

They believed but were just angry at Him (very, very angry)...probably because He wasn't willing to approve of their behavior and lifestyles. Their attitude toward God reminded me of the way children are sometimes angry with parents. It was a test of wills.
