I disagree - the GOP rank and file are almost as torpid as the leadership.

In 2005, when Bush and McCain tried to shove Amnesty down our throats, I became the best informed and one of the most passionate Immigration Restrictionists on Free Republic for the next 10 years.

I finally gave up 15 months into Trump's first term, when not one foot of The Wall had been built.

There is no consequential passion anywhere in the Republican Party, or at Free Republic, to stop massive legal and illegal immigration, even though 70% of new naturalized citizens vote against the GOP.
