HONOLULU (AP) — A jury on Thursday found two Native Hawaiian men guilty of a hate crime for the 2014 beating of a white man who was fixing up a house he purchased in their remote Maui neighborhood.

...In an unusual move, the U.S. Department of Justice sought to prosecute Alo-Kaonohi and Aki and secured a federal grand jury indictment in December 2020 charging each with a hate crime....Prosecutors alleged during the trial in U.S. District Court in Honolulu that Alo-Kaonohi and Aki were motivated by Christopher Kunzelman’s race when they punched, kicked and used a shovel to beat him...

First Amendment in the Bill of Rights, prohibits the government from making “hate crimes” charges.

The actual crime was assault - not a federal matter, here.

Oh that’s right, native Hawaiians have an epithet for whites that starts with an ‘h’. I guess they got themselves into trouble by using it on the victim. One wonders if they would have avoided a hate crime charge by using different verbiage while beating him with a shovel.

The H word is similar to the N word, but lacks the friendly respectful connotation that the N word implies

Not sure if you are being sarcastic or not. Amongst themselves blacks use the term nigger in a friendly way. I’m not sure, but they may even use it for a white friend.

Years and years ago my son came home from Junior High and he told me you can’t say “nigger” but you can say “nigga”. I told him “I don’t care what others use - but you are NEVER to use either of those words in public. You want your head kicked in!!??” (Oh - he’s white.)

One reason we left Maui was that anti-haole attitude. We never experienced violence, though.

I've read here and there that native Hawaiians are quite racist and clannish...

I really wouldn't mind if they made their own country....then they'll be super nice to all us Halo's.....they'll be begging us to come and bring our tourist dollars.

This hatred against anyone not Hawaiian has been going on for a long time.
Years ago I read that singer Bette Midler was raised in Hawaii and was beaten up a few times by native kids.
She thinks some didnt like her because she was Jewish. Others didn’t like her because she was “White” to them.

so when did “Haole” become ‘The H Word”?

We do not need any more word burning around here thank you.

“Haole” is a word that native hawaiians use to label people they don’t like. Kind of like if I was to call someone a democrat.

Violence against Haoles has been around for a while. I was based on Oahu for a few years and you had to keep your eye out for large Hawaiian males when we were out on our own.

They tangled with the wrong one of us once, though - we had an Executive Officer for our battalion who was a large, quiet and intimidating man and he heard people in his back yard on base one evening. He went to investigate, and it was two large and aggressive Hawaiian men. The XO made very short work of both of them - which was no surprise to any of us who worked with the XO. Both men had to be medically evacuated and all the XO used was his bare hands.
