There was an election in 1864, with two parties. One was the DEMOCRAT party. The same party of the Confederacy.

Exactly my point. The question is how long the suspension of habeas corpus and the arrest of opposition newspaper editors lasted. It was temporary, and afterwards it was rescinded. And the Democrat party, while it was nominally a party in 1864, those in the South who sided with secession were disenfranchised both by the war and then under the 13th Amendment for having been in armed rebellion, which was defined real loosely, and so were not allowed to vote until 1876, when, newly re-enfranchised, they backed Tilden, who got a majority of the popular vote, but the Republicans managed to win the election for Hayes by various means. But it nearly caused a second civil war.
Also, in 1864, the Democrat candidate was General McClellan, who based his campaign on the notion that the war was unwinnable, NOT that he favored secession, against which he led troops, however incompetently. That idea pretty much was put paid to by the razing of Atlanta.
I’m sorry you don’t know what the f@#$ I’m talking about. But at least get to know what you’re talking about before adding your two cents.

Democracy is a political philosophy, and in application is widely varied. For instance, pure democracy — one person, one vote — is nothing but majority rule, which puts the minority at great peril. On the other hand, representative democracy under constitutional restraints seeks to protect that minority. The former is easy; the latter, quite difficult — but much better.
Just heard out Olga Onuch on the state of democracy in Ukraine, and she was very informative and knowledgeable. She’s worth listening to.

If you want to condemn the lack of democracy in Ukraine without also mentioning the even worse lack of democracy in Russia, then by implication you are defending Russia.
