S. Security needs fixing; but it is like yanking someone out of the path of a speeding vehicle just in the nick of time, only to get sued for all you’re worth after giving him whiplash.
S. Security is pretty well doomed to go over the cliff; and it’s a radioactive topic politically. There are some sensible solutions that are possible in theory, but not in practical politics.
So yeah — it’s a great idea to announce ways to save S. Security by cutting benefits or increasing working people’s contributions. That way you can prevent the election of 50-60 good candidates whose opponents campaign by scaring voters by broad-brushing your proposal with half-truths. It’s a 100% guaranteed losing issue.
