I went through the same process (and was even zotted in less than a year) a decade and 1/2 ago.
Not much has changed, except , in many ways, it is more tame than it was back then.

In fact, I’m reminded of an incident in 1918, in Collinsville, IL. A German-American man made the mistake of saying something in his native tongue. He was stripped naked, made to walk on broken beer bottles, while the mob sang patriotic songs, and marched him to the end of town, where they hanged him from a tree. The local paper at the time said it was a great way to treat enemies of the United States.

Because he spoke German.
