He won the nomination in 2016 by destroying all the rival candidates (none of whom would have been able to win the general election)—a lot of it by name-calling. But I don’t think it is going to work to clear the field of any potential rivals for 2024, although that may be his strategy, judging from his behavior the last week. We’ll have to see what his big announcement is on Tuesday.
What if his big announcement is a agreement to go to the Jan 6 committee in Prime Time?

Right. Such behavior is expected during a primary season. But it’s very, very off-putting otherwise.
Trump’s base might be energized by all this. But those folks are already firmly in the Trump camp. It’s those squishy folks in the middle who are dismayed by Trump’s recent comments. I know a lot of those folks. You probably do, too.
Trump is losing them, those folks in the middle.

Trump seems not to be using his natural skills to read the room. Maybe he thinks any less than supportive public response on his actions for the last weeks to be Fake News.
