In the latest blow to Oakland's Pill Hill neighborhood, the Walgreens store at Telegraph Avenue and 34th Street is closing.
Just across the street from Walgreens, 93-year-old bakery Taste of Denmark shut its doors less than two weeks ago. A few blocks up the road at Telegraph Avenue and 29th Street, Commonwealth Cafe and Pub announced this week it will be closing at the end of the year as well.
The 3400 Telegraph Ave. Walgreens will close on Tuesday, Nov. 8, according to a sign posted outside the store. A Walgreens representative confirmed the closure to SFGATE.

Posting this a week late.
It’s a shame this convenient location is closing, right at the foot of Pill Hill (hospital neighborhood). The whole neighborhood is going down the pipes. There’s a huge homeless encampment under the 580 freeway overpass a block away. This store has seen its share of shoplifting incidents as well.
On the bright side...that’s green!
Are these stores in neighborhoods with sociological problems?
I'm guessing one of the changing buying habits was customers who skipped the "paying for stuff" part and just walked out the door with their items.
Who knew no consequence sub $900 robbery has consequences after all.
Meanwhile, back in the other coast:

“The Boston City Council is taking aim at Walgreens after the company chose to close three stores in Mattapan, Hyde Park, and Roxbury.
The council plans to use their legislative powers to stop Walgreens from opening any future stores in the city unless they halt the closures. An ultimatum like this is not unprecedented. Former Mayor Thomas Menino sent a letter to Chic-Fil-A, telling the company not to open in the city because of their views on same-sex marriage.…”
Don’t try it if you’re white. No exceptions there.
Indeed yes.
Decades ago, 40-plus years ago, this was a nice little neighborhood with a Danish bakery (Neldam's) across the street and a Scandinavian delicatessen/gift shop (Nordic House) next door.
The neighborhood is definitely in decline and nothing is being done about it.
Will there be riots?
Boston doesn’t want to let Walgreens close some stores there:
That sounds like an unconstitutional bill of attainder.
Well there’s this thing called the 8th commandment. It also has no exceptions no matter what skin tone you have.
Strictly closing due to racism, not massive losses by urban gibbs-me-dats.
Loss prevention is also racist.
Race problem or problem race?
Congress shall not …
Good!

if I were Walgreens, I’d close all the stores in Boston.

"I'll buy an ‘I’, Pat."
Isn’t ‘Build back Better’ just wonderful? Keep voting in the ‘Rats’ and you get their Rat hole results.
