It was a Bell P-63. That had better visibility than a P-51.
The pilot may have a medical problem or perhaps target fixation.
I'd guess high speed-high performance aircraft are a little tricky to fly, and may not have great handling characteristics at low speed.
Also, that was quite a fireball from the B-17, shouldn't these plane be flying with minimum fuel?
