Trotsky thought communism was a good thing for all the workers of the world.
Stalin though communism/bolshevism was a good thing for Russia only and that the whole world should become part of Russia. Kind of the same viewpoint that is driving Putin. Too bad it didn’t happen to Stalin instead, maybe?
Why do I say maybe? Thru my middle childhood in the late 1940s, my father was gone almost every evening trying to prevent the communists in the port of New York from taking over his union. Eventually the communists in his union got a payoff from management and the union when commie. In the same period Gus Hall was busy trying to take over the west coast ports for the stalinist commies there. All through WW2 the US stalinists did their best to successfully keep Trotsky from visiting the US to discuss US/Russia relations and war matters. How might the last 70 years been different if Trotsky had been running Russia rather than Stalin? It is suggested that Lenin wanted Trotsky rather than Stalin to succeed him, but Stalin tricked him and grabbed the prize.
Trotsky and Stalin were rivals but the key point is that they both supported the subversion of other countries. The Comintern had some successes in America as you well know. The appeal of Trotsky on campuses is that he cannot be tagged with all of Stalin’s crimes. But Trotsky was evil up one side and down the other judging from his record with the Red Army.
The reason the unions didn’t go Communist was that the US government made a deal with the Mafia to look the other way while the Mafia took over the Unions.
Trotsky was ultimately more dangerous.
