People looking for a scapegoat for last night - and they are blaming who ?? The man who singlehandedly brought back the GOP from the dead. The man who singlehandedly drives voter enthusiasm. Such ingratitude.
I think you’re misremembering things. Hillary was one of the most despised candidates in decades. I think even Biden in his current state without minders could beat her. Trump managed to grab attention from a very lackluster GOP field by his showmanship and antics and partially because the Dems underestimated him using him as a spoiler for other candidates they feared more. But while he was a showman in a way the typical GOP wasn’t he always was a guy with numerous flaws, both personal and political, who won against an extremely hated woman. This myth that Trump came in and won against the Dems best and brightest and improved the party on all fronts is silly revisionism.

After the Bush/Cheney “warfare party” almost killed off the GOP, making the Republican brand about as popular as a child molester, while paving the way for the Obama Presidency.
Trump picked up the pieces and started going after voters that both parties abandoned during their race to globalize everything.
He then defeated Hillary Clinton in 2016.(She didn’t become a bad candidate until after that defeat BTW)
Trump isn’t handing the torch to DeSantis, he’ll compete for delegates in the Republican Primaries just like he did in 2016 & 2020.
I hope DeSantis does run in 2024, he wasn’t on stage in 2016 when a plethora of candidates wanted the job. So I’m glad he’s now confident enough to take his game national.
It should be a fun primary.
