The party bosses pick both candidates. Sometimes they even despise each other.
McCain didn't want Palin and publicly undercut her because she outshone him. Palin didn't want McCain after that and sadly she could have done much better without him or with someone else.
Reagan didn't want Bush, the Deep State ex-CIA corruptocrat.
Nixon didn't want Agnew and especially didn't want him when running for re-election.
Kennedy picked Johnson after months of having no running mate. The Kennedys apparently loathed Johnson but had no choice within the party.
Eisenhower didn't want Nixon and publicly gaffed with what was meant to be a joke when he said he didn't trust him. It was too close to the truth though.
