Incumbent Matt Gaetz defeated Democratic challenger Rebekah Jones Tuesday night in the race for the Florida District 1 Congressional seat.
Gaetz's victory Tuesday night means he will serve his fourth term as Congressman for District 1.
Gaetz was confident on Election Day, telling WEAR News he would get close to winning every precinct across our four counties by the end of the night.
He also says, as Congressman, he will continue to be "laser-focused" on Northwest Florida's military mission, as well as securing the border and combating inflation.
“I am laser-focused on Northwest Florida’s military mission," Gaetz said. "Making sure we grow it and support it, but every Northwest Floridian every American has been suffering under crushing inflation. And so in the upcoming Congress I’m gonna work to cut spending so that we don’t have these inflationary forces in our economy. And the border, I’ve been hearing a lot about the border, the American people want this border secure. And if this administration won’t do it they deserve impeachment.”
Jones spoke to WEAR News following her loss.
“As somebody who had zero political experience before this, it’s been insane," she said. "It’s been at times disappointing and at times uplifting. I think that I’ve walked away with, if anything, a very deep disdain for partisanship, for party politics, for the whole 'team blue versus team red.' I think it’s destructive. ...I think whatever politics might lie in my future, might lie as an Independent.”
Good job, Matt!!!!
