Judge orders armed group away from Arizona ballot drop boxes

PHOENIX (AP) — A federal judge on Tuesday ordered armed members of a group monitoring ballot drop boxes in Arizona to stay at least 250 feet away from the locations following complaints that people wearing masks and carrying guns were intimidating voters.

U.S. District Court Judge Michael Liburdi said members of Clean Elections USA, its leader and anyone working with them are also barred from filming or following anyone within 75 feet (23 meters) of a ballot drop box or the entrance to a building that houses one. They also cannot speak to or yell at individuals within that perimeter unless spoken to first.

The temporary restraining order was requested by the League of Women Voters of Arizona after Clean Elections USA, encouraged people to watch 24-hour ballot boxes in Maricopa County, Arizona’s most populous county.

“It is paramount that we balance the rights of the defendant to engage in their constitutionally protected First Amendment activity with the interest in the plaintiffs and in voters casting a vote free of harassment and intimidation,” Liburdi said.

A second set of defendants in rural Yavapai County — groups known as the Lions of Liberty and the Yavapai County Preparedness team, who are associated with the far-right anti-government group Oath Keepers — were dismissed from the case on Monday after they pledged to stand down their operations.

Local and federal law enforcement have been alarmed by reports of people, some armed, watching 24-hour ballot boxes in the two counties as midterm elections near. Some voters have complained alleging voter intimidation after people watching the boxes took photos and videos, and followed voters.

I’m thinking that you can’t influence through inherent threats somebody’s right to vote.

I think monitoring is ok, but not being armed around ballot boxes.

Let me suggest that other local residents use their video recording devices. Leave your masks and arms at home.

This, or a more subdued form of it is what a judge should have said to that group of Black Panthers how were seen guarding a voting center way back in 2008.
Should have nipped that intimidation plan in the bud.

“I think monitoring is ok, but not being armed around ballot boxes.”

I’d walk past a group of armed ‘rats to vote.

They can film me if they want.

If they are not blocking me, why should I block them legally or otherwise?

Someone PLEASE tell this F'd Up judge that open carry is LEGAL in Arizona.

The DemonRats are desperate. How DARE anyone attempt to stop their CRAMMING OF BALLOT BOXES WITH FRAUDULENT VOTES.

Are ballot boxes now POLLING PLACES? NO. They are merely BOXES FOR DROPPING OFF ENVELOPES. "Intimidated" my ARSE, or maybe "INTIMIDATED FROM CARRYING OUT BALLOT FRAUD" MORE LIKELY.

“I think monitoring is ok, but not being armed around ballot boxes.”

Wearing a mask may be questionable (reminiscent of the KKK), but in the Old West nearly every man near or in a polling place probably was packing.

Banning masks near polling places would prevent masked mules from voting multiple times.

If the legislature acts fast, the judge will be hoisted on his own opinion.

A Trump judge. This is the difference between a Trump judge and a Clinton/Bush/Obama judge.

I agree. Keep your guns at home (or legally concealed) and don’t say anything. Just observe and take pictures.

Conceal your firearms, stand off and film. Reassure, not intimidate.

A Trump judge (foolishly) trying to show he is impartial. Like some of his Supreme Court picks. Clinton /Obama judges don’t even try to look impartial. It’s full bore naked partisanship without exception.

All you need is somebody to walk up to a ballot box and walk away and claim they couldn’t cast their vote because they were intimidated by an armed person nearby.

I remember in 2012, in Philadelphia those armed Black Panthers by the doors. I also remember Freepers who said that was intimidation.

I don’t support early voting. On the day of the voting, you show up and vote. I don’t support these drop boxes. However, until they can be eliminated legally, it is better to not monitor them while armed. Lots of eyewitnesses, however.

There are several flavors of Trump judges:
