Elon Musk adds to the Twitter uncertainty with a bizarre tweet about the Pelosi attacker—which then vanishes
Fortune ^ | October 30, 2022 | STEVE MOLLMAN

The Elon Musk Twitter saga just keeps getting weirder. Days after Musk finally took control of the social media platform, he fired off a head-scratching tweet from a dubious source about the man who violently attacked Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Then his tweet, which he posted early Sunday, vanished later in the day.

Amid many doubts about where Musk will take Twitter, the sequence only deepened the uncertainty.

Musk was responding to a tweet from Hillary Clinton, who shared a Los Angeles Times article about the suspect, 42-year-old David DePape, who became immersed in right-wing conspiracies online. She wrote, “The Republican Party and its mouthpieces now regularly spread hate and deranged conspiracy theories. It is shocking, but not surprising, that violence is the result.”

Musk responded, “There is a tiny possibility there might be more to this story than meets the eye,” including a link to an article claiming the attacker was someone Paul Pelosi met at a gay bar.

It was then widely reported that Musk deleted his tweet, prompting one disappointed Twitter user to write, “Never cave to the leftist mob. Never!”

HuffPost then tweeted an update to its reporting on the incident, writing, “UPDATE: Elon Musk, Twitter’s new CEO, had his own tweet deleted from the platform after he pushed a false conspiracy theory about the recent life-threatening assault on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband.”

Fortune reached out to Twitter for clarification on how the tweet was deleted but did not receive an immediate response.

One Twitter user joked of Musk, “You know he’s just going to say this was a test.”

However the incident unfolds, it will do little to instill confidence among the many Twitter users—among them celebrities, lawmakers, and advertisers—apprehensive about where Musk will take the platform.

Musk’s drama-filled $44 billion takeover of the company was finalized on Thursday, and so far there’s little sign of calm being established. Trolls were quick flood the platform with offensive slurs and antisemitic memes after Musk—a self-described “free-speech absolutist”—took control.

The Network Contagion Research Institute, a social media research firm, reported that use on the N-word spiked 500% on Twitter in the 12 hours after Musk took control. LeBron James called the news “scary AF,” adding, “So many damn unfit people saying hate speech is free speech.”

In response, Musk shared a tweet from a Twitter employee reading, “Nearly all of these accounts are inauthentic. We’ve taken action to ban the users involved in this trolling campaign—and are going to continue working to address this in the days to come to make Twitter safe and welcoming for everyone.”

Not everyone is convinced.

Despite Musk rushing to reassure advertisers that the platform wouldn’t become a “free-for-all hellscape,” General Motors said it would pause advertising on Twitter, adding, “We are engaging with Twitter to understand the direction of the platform under their new ownership.”

And yesterday Shonda Rhimes, the screenwriter and producer behind hit shows like Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy, tweeted that she’d be leaving the platform, writing: “Not hanging around for whatever Elon has planned. Bye.”

Amid the uncertainty, Musk’s bizarre, short-lived tweet will likely do little to reassure doubters.

Hillary talking about deranged conspiracy theories? That's like Hitler or Himmler accusing someone of antisemitism. There's her Russia collusion fabrications. She recently said that “Right-wing extremists already have a plan to literally steal the next presidential election, and they’re not making a secret of it”. Back in 2020 she accused Tulsi Gabbard of working for the Russians. Going back to when her hubby was Pres, she said that the Monica Lewinsky affair was a "vast right-wing conspiracy". Insane conspiracy claims are her stock-in-trade.

The lefties are trying to pressure Musk to keep Twitter as the lefty loony bin it has become. Conservatives who left it need to go back imo.

There was nothing ‘bizarre’ about it, nor anything potentially actionable, imho.
Wish I’d screenshot it, tho I’m sure others have.

Hey Fortune, isn’t GM a competitor with Tesla? Maybe that’s the reason they’re pulling ads. (This isn’t my idea. I’m repeating it because it’s a good one.)

So, let’s do a quick recap:

•The intruder is wily enough to find Pelosi’s address and enter, but not know that she’s in Washington just a few days before a major national election.

•The house, belonging to a filthy rich millionaire and politician 3rd in line for the Presidency has no alarms, security guards, or any available video footage of the incident. A single photo of the home shows a broken window, but the glass is on the outside of the house.

•Although it’s an exclusive area, no neighborhood video is available.

•The ‘victim’ says he needs to go to the bathroom, for some reason is allowed to step away from the violent assailant, and has enough time to use the phone and make a phone call to 911.

•The ‘victim’ reportedly tells 911 that the intruder is a friend, and leaves the line open.

•Police arrive minutes later and find the ‘victim’ alive and scuffling for a hammer, both men reportedly in underwear. Police arrest intruder during the attack. A third person opens the door for the police who remains unidentified.

•The intruder is identified and described as a Berkeley nudism/BLM/LGBT advocate.

•Media later claims intruder to also be a far-right wing extremist.

If you believe all of this to be true, the Dems have a new Presidential candidate.

Tell Nancy it’s hammer time. She won’t know if it’s to get drunk or run from gay men in underwear!

I don’t think it’s beyond the realm to believe that a twit engineer sent a tweet on Musk’s account.

Reckoning acomin’...

Exactly, Fortune is gone too. Shame, they are supposed to be a finance publication. GM suspended ads because Tesla now owns Twitter and they know it.

Nothing Bizarre about the tweet. It wasn't a break in. It was a let in.

Just like Paul's auto crash and DUI, this is a total coverup.

Wondering when the SF PD dept will figure out they are getting pulled under with this sinking ship and start throwing this boat anchor overboard.

The house has Cameras and motion detectors all over it.

The early reports were true, and now they have to be quashed and erased so the official version can be broadcast to the masses.

General Motors was backing out before Pelosi’s escort showed up.

GM is a Political animal and they want nothing to do with little people stating opinions.

General Motors said it would pause advertising on Twitter, adding, “We are engaging with Twitter to understand the direction of the platform under their new ownership.”

Of COURSE they are not going to give advertising money to the CEO of a major competitor, Tesla. That would be like Coca-Cola doing a promotion with Frito-Lay, which is owned by PepsiCo.

In DC, the Police Dept was forwarding inquiries on the Seth Rich case to Donna Brazile!

The Politicization of Police Chiefs and management occurred over 10 years ago.

Yep.

Given today’s tech, I surveil. Even if only to grab the Dog to avoid confrontations with the multiplicity of FedEx/UPS/USPS peeps.

If you met her 5 times in my presence and gave her a treat, she’d be your friend for life.

Otherwise, think Junk Yard Dog.

I let her walk point on the trails in the local NF on our near daily hikes.
