For a month, it appears the sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln were drinking water contaminated with bilge water--liquid consisting of sink, shower and sewage drainage. This is a fail for the Navy and designers of the USS Abraham Lincoln. It appears the Navy was confused about the source of the contaminated water. The story reports "The Navy said at the time that the presence of E. coli bacteria was actually unrelated to reports of an "odor and cloudiness," which the service said disappeared on September 22." Yeah, right,

The Navy must have hired some woke engineers to plumb their boats. Don’t waste sewage, reuse it.

Eventually, all plumbing pipe connections leak. If you don’t specify the right stuff, some leak sooner than others. Maybe they need double the number of people who review the ship specifications, before building anymore... Cross connection situations are usually caused by people who didn’t know what they were doing.

When I was on the FID ( the First In Defense, USD Forrestal, CV59)... You were warned not to have open flame around the drinking fountains...
You could literally light the drinking water on fire...
Contaminated with aviation fuel...

Where are the health science sailors on the ship? Why isn’t point source testing done daily as it is in most public water systems? Water tests are routine, done easily, and would pinpoint Coliform bacteria identifying the point source of the contamination quickly. The people in charge of our institutions are failing. There is no excuse for this.

Oct. 21 Navy Release: "The inspection concluded that bilge water entered one of the potable water tanks through a hole that was found in the tank’s air vent line, causing the cloudy appearance and odor in the ship’s potable water."

Maybe the Navy was concentrating too much on Wokey McWokerson issues?

If the water on a ship suddenly looks and smells funny wouldn’t the immediate suspicion be that it’s been contaminated with bilge water?

Bilge water is famously vile. I saw it and smelled it. We had a bilge pump on my father’s 1948 Chis Craft. Powered by an inboard Chrysler slant Six. Wooden hull.
