The US Navy now knows why the water on an aircraft carrier looked and smelled strange. It had wastewater in it.

Supposedly the UnRep incident in question resulted in a differentiation in the size/configuration of the two standpipes Navywide so as to render the operation foolroof and make sure the unintended “swap out” would never happen again.

Heh, I had one of those things turn my helmet sideways one time...I was new at this, over in the catwalk next to the waist cat, and when they launched, everyone with experience ducked their head down but me.

That blast put my earcup nearly over my left eye...

I served on a slightly newer aircraft carrier(CVN 68) The commanding officers(CO and XO) were top notch. I went through a couple of them while on board. That said, at the departmental level, that wasn’t necessarily the case. I had an outgoing departmental head (Lt. Commander) tell me to lay low because the new incoming department head was an asshole. One of the best piece of advice I received from a boss ever...

Me too! LOL, I must say, up on that flight deck, we saw things the vast majority of people never get to see. I am grateful for my service, I learned so much from it, and grew up a lot too.

Yes...it kind of runs the gamut, doesn’t it? You just have to go with the flow, because you can’t control it. Funny. We had a division officer we just worshiped, the guy was a real leader and we just followed him like ducks...:)

I spent about a month (I think) on the Eisenhower (CVN 69) when she was pretty new.

Thanks for your service, FRiend...:)

Society is too concerned with following bureaucratic regulations. Instead of being concerned about producing a quality product/service, people are being hired to meet diversity goals, follow OSHA regulations, comply with tax regulations.

What once plagued every government agency (going from a functional entity to packed with non-productive people, looking at you NASA)... that has trickled down to every mid to large business.

The Nimitz had a similar problem several weeks ago

To me, the worst thing health-wise I ever encountered on a carrier was during a week or two stint on the USS Lexington in Pensacola.

I was berthed in some compartment that must have had a bunker fuel tank venting into it. I couldn’t sleep the entire time I was there, I would drift into semi-sleep then wake up fully feeling feverish and nauseous, sweating, with the taste of fuel in my mouth and nose. Ugh. It was terrible.

The Lexington was, at that point, probably a 35 year old ship, and run down.

Of course, for disgusting, was when I was on the JFK, there was always water on the deck in the heads, most of it was from showers stalls I supposed. Of course, I had the stupid flip-flops on my feet. But one day the water was deeper, which meant my bare feet were being immersed in the water.

As I was at a sink, my vague degree of distaste at the water I normally felt turned into real disgust when, as brushing my teeth, looked down to see pieces of soggy toilet paper in varying degrees of disintegration.

I stopped brushing my teeth as my eyes fixed on it, and my mind began to dimly form the logic “Where there is toilet paper in water, there is...” and my eyes found the source of the water. There was a toilet, broken into pieces, laying on the deck. Looking closer, I noticed there were turds floating around in the water! Gaaaaaaasaaahhhh!

I experienced a sewage backup or 2 way back in the day. I read the Navy may delay sending the Nimitz and Eisenhower to the the razor blade factory. The tentative plan was Nimitz 2025 and Ike 2027.

Ditto. I know what you mean. It been almost 40 years since I left the Navy.

Sounds like we must have been in around the same time...interesting times. For me, the most internally formative years of my life.
