Sailors on the Lincoln originally noticed an "odor and cloudy appearance" in the ship's drinking and bathing water on September 21, and testing the following day revealed that E. coli bacteria was present in some of the vessel's potable water tanks, the Navy said in an October 13 statement.
The Navy said at the time that the presence of E. coli bacteria was actually unrelated to reports of an "odor and cloudiness," which the service said disappeared on September 22.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, bilge water is liquid that drains from the interior areas or upper decks of a ship and gets collected in the lowest part of its body. Though the physical composition of a ship's bilge water can vary, it's considered to be wastewater and can consist of everything from sink drainage to fuel to chemicals to even sewage.

But tasted a bit nutty
Rule number #1 when troubleshooting water systems: TOC, which stands for Taste, Odor, Color.
I hoped someone would chime in...
:)
I firmly believe that every question asked can be answered using a line from a movie, tv show or song. Same holds true for replies to any topic on FR.
I concur, and try to accomplish that on a daily basis.
I wouldn't assume any potential perpetrator is male.
It’s only natural that sailors confused about their gender and pronouns would also be confused about which places to pee/poop.
I read somewhere that the latest class of carriers have a plumbing design flaw that cannot be fixed and is going into the future carriers as well.
Nice..
Having survived living and working in NYC in the 60s and 70s when *NOTHING* worked, I feel experienced at this game.
I was with the “Q” squadron...
Hey, you weren’t the guy that fell asleep in an A-7 intake were you?
Navy Capt. Amy Bauernschmidt, CO of USS Abraham Lincoln, CVN-72.
A helicopter pilot whose awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy/Marine Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various unit, campaign, and service medals.
Capt. Amy is no doubt in close consultation with her Engineering Officer. I don't envy them. A design flaw would, it seems, have been encountered in this class of ship long before this.
“And this is why steel ships have a maximum life expectancy of 40 years or so. It isn’t feasible to replace all the miles of pipes and valves on the ship.”
The piping, valves, engines, even the hull on ships are replaced over time. For example, the shipyard I retired from worked on this vessel regularly:
“COLUMBIA is a Dredger built in 1944 by US NAVAL SHIPYARD - BOSTON MA, U.S.A.. Currently sailing under the flag of United States (USA). Formerly also known as COLUMBIA, COLUMBUS, MILLARD COUNTY, MILLARD COUNTY LST 9. It’s gross tonnage is 3081 tons.”

I actually wondered sometimes if this ship had one piece of the original ship left. Note it’s an ex-Navy ship.
LOL, no! I did take a nap in the wheel well of an S3 Viking once, though, but...there wasn’t any flying in THAT storm in the North Atlantic!
I was asleep in my cockpit when the Tomcat went over the side...and I was asleep in my cockpit when we hit the Bordelon that night!
You would think I did little else but sleep in a cockpit...
Were you vith VAQ-133?
I loved those Prowlers, they seemed to go like bats out of hell! And LOUD.
LOL, sometimes I feel that way too...:)
The potable water and JP5 pipestands had the same male fitting for UnRep purposes and were near each other on the external O-2 deck of One Guy’s Oliver Hazard Perry class FFG. Color of potable water pipestands was light blue. Color for JP-5 was a middling purple. At twilight, Deck Division couldn’t tell the difference between the two colors.
Guess what happened during UnRep.
Yes sir...
No slack in electric attack..
The canopies we’re coated in gold..
A damn flying antenna
Like I said...
