Server farms have better security. Why can’t schools? didn’t bother to review best practices?

Because, obviously, that is not the goal.

You know what their goal is, right?

Server farms have extremely low human populations relative to their floor areas, and therefore limited points of entry/exit, and low egress requirements.
Schools are jam packed with people coming and going constantly, and must be capable of rapid mass evacuation in case of fire. Out of a 1000+ high school kids, some are going to figure out how to evade security to sneak in and out, then the cork is out of the bottle. The will to make schools into high security prisons is not there.

In the current case, I bet students have some sort of card or code to get in, that the school officials were either too sorry to update, or the killer obtained a student’s card. He could also have just mingles in with a group of students.
as they entered. When the police don’t want to reveal facts in the aftermath of disaster, it is often to hide incompetence.
