If one single member of Congress would have done so, they would be a national hero. Not even any need to agree, just walk out and meet them and hear their concerns.
It would have utterly stood out.

Nobody could vouch for everybody who was in the crowd or guarantee how everyone in the crowd would react to what someone chose to say. It would have been taking a risk for a senator or representative to enter the crowd.
Also, "hid in a supply closet" isn't exactly an unbiased headline. Everybody was looking for secure places and they had to gather somewhere.

I have seen democrat party protests with them roaming the halls of congress and zero was done about it.
Cruz is part of the anti-trumpers.
