In 1990 I was the Battalion Motor Sgt for an AIT training unit. I had 90% of the E4 and below because all of the 88M Instructors were E6 and above.
I was tasked to provide a soldier who needed a food basket at Thanksgiving. I made the offer but no one was interested. I was told I WOULD have a soldier receive the food basket. I got with my NCO’s and picked an E4 with 5 kids. He reluctantly agreed.
He appeared at the appointed time and place to pick up the food basket where the Post and local Press took pictures. I got my ass chewed the next day because he arrived in his new car to pick up the basket.
Have you tried to raise kids on an E-4’s pay?
They should not be allowed to get married, or have kids without permission from superiors. \s/
I was a house painter by trade. I had contracts with property management in a county that was awash with military. They routinely lived in houses that today sell for $500K, cut that in half for the past. The point being, these places rented for $2,000+ per month, and the military rented these easily. They were getting housing allowances that covered 3/4’s of housing costs. I routinely asked how they could afford it, and they told me it was simple. I am not talking about Commanders, Captains etc either. The program rapes the public, raising prices for all people in the area, and relegating them to slum type housing.
If they can’t afford the cost to live on their pay, don’t get married, have kids, or enlist. There is always the ship to live on, BEQ or BOQ. I know it is the high cost of running the country at a wartime footing for 75 years. Maybe we shouldn’t be doing that anymore.
In general I don’t disagree. Except when the station doesn’t present opportunities for a spouse that WAS working…but cannot.
In 1974 I could pay a months rent, gas, food and fun on a weeks pay.
You are correct, my Dad was career Navy, and raised 7 kids from 1948 to transition to the semi-private sector. My oldest brother got a paper route, he was allowed to keep $5 a month, the rest went into the kitty. The entire family kept that route going into the 1970’s with the same deal. Everyone worked, everyone contributed, except my Mom took care of the home and all of us. He made less than a Union Laborer, but after retirement he went back into the Civilian side and then it paid off. LIFE, live it love it.
How much is going to bums and unpaid street walkers and their broods. That is a problem for Congress. Who would stay in at that rate? How much do they get for reenlistment bonuses?
If you’re still only a staff sergeant after 18 years, you have other problems.
What planet are you living on? I made more delivering pizzas than My military friends…
Looking at the current pay scales that’s still true
