Giorgia Meloni has today been sworn in as Italy's first far-right premier since the end of the Second World War as well as the first woman to take the role of Italian Prime Minister. Ms Meloni, 45, whose political party has neo-fascist roots, took the oath of office before the Italian president at the Quirinale Presidential Palace in Rome. ....[snip] Her coalition allies include the anti-immigrant and right-wing League of Matteo Salvini and the conservative Forza Italia party headed by former premier Silvio Berlusconi. Ms Meloni recited the ritual oath of office, pledging to be faithful to Italy's post-war republic and to act 'in the exclusive interests of the nation'.

Many of the comments at the site are pooh-poohing the characterization “far right.”

“Far right”. Yeah, we’ll see how far right. It’s almost as if far right is a bad thing. The media is just itching to link Meloni to fascism.

“Far Right”. They can’t help themselves. Anything right of Macron, Scholz or Trudeau is ultra right to them.

The Daily Mail is a “far left” publication. Ask them to explain that.

Nothing Far Right about her. To them a Centrist is Far Right.

Ms Meloni, 45, will be Italy's first far-right leader since fascist Mussolini was deposed during WW2 in 1943. I wouldn't call Mussolini "far right," since fascism was, at its core, socialist. I would say she's more of a conservative in the tradition of Alcide de Gasperi, the Christian Democratic Party leader who dominated Italian politics in the years following WWII and who did much to save Italy from Communism strengthen its commitment to the West.
To: BenLurkin
Anything to the right of Mussolini.
