Putin brings in martial law in annexed Ukrainian territory amid fears he will move to full war footing and detonate a nuke over Black Sea -

Putin evacuates 60,000 people before Battle of Kherson

Vladimir Putin declared martial law in occupied Ukraine, handing him sweeping new powers over civilians Comes after officials ordered evacuation from occupied Kherson, as Ukraine's forces push to re-take city

If Putin's army is forced to flee the city, it would be the most humiliating defeat it has yet suffered in Ukraine Fears are growing that Putin may be plotting a nuclear show of force over the Black Sea to save his invasion

Experts believe Putin may detonate a nuke at a remote testing ground or above the Black Sea to prove that Russia's huge but ageing stockpile of warheads still works.

Speculation has been growing that Putin could be preparing some kind of nuclear show of force, potentially including the first open-air detonation of an atomic weapon since the 1960s, which ramped up after UK defence secretary Ben Wallace was summoned to last-minute talks at the Pentagon yesterday.

Vladimir Putin has declared martial law in the occupied regions of Ukraine as officials begin evacuating civilians from the city of Kherson, with a battle for control of the stronghold now looming.

Putin said the order will come into effect from midnight tonight in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions - giving him sweeping powers to curtail the freedoms of civilians, repurpose industries and potentially press-gang Ukrainians into his army to fight against their fellow countrymen.

The order also affects occupied Crimea and Krasnodar, Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Kursk, and Rostov, all of which are on Russia's own territory bordering Ukraine, though stops short of full martial law in these areas.

Putin made the announcement shortly after Sergei Surovikin, Russia's new commander, said the situation in Kherson is 'tense'.

Katie, you know that when the Democrats accuse you of something to get ready because the Democrats are going to do it to you. You are correct. Neither George Soros’ disciples nor the disciples of Lying Joe Biden on Free Republic have been able to influence things in a meaningful way. Though they have been, to say the least obnoxious. In the end of the day, it is not our monkey. It is not our circus. They have been squabbling over there since Noah got off the Ark. One side will win this time. the other side will win next time. We have our hands full at our Southern Border. This is being neglected by design so that more wet backs and narcotics to be legalized slip past. And the people are like the Old Mother Duck, They don't give a quack. All the people wish to do is do the bidding of Lying Joe Biden and George Soros. The facts bear this out.

Two differences between Russia and Ukraine: a) Russia has vast deposits of natural resources critical to Western economies, and b) Russia has the largest nuclear weapons arsenal in the world.

Ignoring the fact that the United States is also a corrupt oligarchy, those two differences make it incredibly dumb to antagonize Russia the way the neo-libs have.

- Russian missile and drone strikes continue for over a week, knocking out much of Ukraine's electric grid;
- Ukraine is wasting precious small arms ammunition in failed attempts to counter Russian Geran-2 drones;
- NATO claims it will send means to counter them - nothing of substance actually revealed;
- Russian forces continue to advance in Bakhmut, indicating Ukrainian forces are stretched too thin;
- Russian General Surovikin is focused on the defense of Kherson which is being evacuated;
- Fighting may reach the city, Russia has in the past withdrawn forces rather than have them destroyed or captured;
- Whatever gains Ukraine makes will be temporary - Kiev is trading its entire army for territory hoping for a political resolution in its favor ahead of a military resolution in Russia's;

“make it incredibly dumb to antagonize Russia the way the neo-libs have.”

It would be a lot easier to ignore if they’d quit invading their neighbors.

They never figured their bullying wouldn’t work with Putin

Exactly how did the West bully Putin? Its Putin that has been bullying neighboring countries nonstop. This pattern of stop-and-go escalation has been happening for years — Western tolerance of Russia’s 2008 invasion of Georgia set the stage for the 2014 annexation of Crimea and the 2014 war in Donbas, which then set the stage for Ukraine's invasion in 2022.

Ukraine has been making “temporary gains” for 8 months now.

Putin thought this would be over in 3 weeks. Now he’s press ganging drunk 40 year olds.

“If a nuke goes off over the Black Sea I will immediately assume it was done by the US or NATO. It would make no sense at all for Russia to do so. “

Wow that’s pretty powerful self loathing!
Do you hate everything about your nation?

And your are supporting mother Russia?

Wow .

The currency exchange is more of a curiosity. Mildly positive/improving over the long run due Br raising rates 2 years before the US and now having the option of lowering rates to improve GDP (but don’t think they will do so -cuz rest of the world sucks worse).

I’m in Br mostly for the dividends which, going into a likely global recession, removes the worries of loss of asset values/trading losses.

“ The currency exchange is more of a curiosity.”

Nothing curious about it.

And it dilutes foreign returns significantly.

Yes all. Russia did the invading. That means he started it. Crazy how certain people keep ignoring that fact.

Yep.

And it is worth half of what it was 20 years ago. Kind of my point. Inflated currency is not the same as wealth.

It’s a curiosity to -me-. I’m an investor not a trader. I’ll be in Br for at least 20 years. Why so confident? Because the corporations in Br are more powerful than the government, with military backing. Their government can’t just print money without assets and those assets are controlled by Br corporations.

How/why can I be so sure? High dividends plus the value of the underlying asset. Oil consumption isn’t going anywhere and the quality and quantity of Br’s pre-salt deposits is many decades of oil production. I don’t have the money to buy a sizeable dividend income stake of ARAMCO or Exxon.

“Why would Putin contaminate seafood and shipping lanes, along with letting fallout flow eastward into Russia? “

It would be a real=life example of EMP effects on modern electronics, too.
