Szijjarto: Hungary withheld vote for EU Ukraine training mission

Hungary's government does not back a proposal for the European Union to start a training mission for the Ukrainian army as this would risk escalating the war, Peter Szijjarto, the foreign minister, on Monday in Luxembourg, where he noted that he lawfully made himself absent from the vote, the only EU member state representative to do so.

The minister noted that his absence had not prevented the proposal from being approved, but Hungary does not want to contribute to the costs of the operation.

“Anything leading to escalation is not something we think is a good idea,” he said during a break of the meeting of EU foreign ministers, adding that central Europe risked being dragged into the conflict as a result.

Clowntoon tried and failed to bully them into attacking Serbia. If Orban could stare down bentdick and his distraction war, than he can resist Mr Potato without problems. Hungarians voters matter to him.

As it gets colder the reality is setting in.
The cracks are beginning to start.
Eventually NATO nations will do what is in their individual best interests. It’s always been that way, and always will be.

No, it just is led by a guy who is torn between the close cultural ties it has with Russia, and not wanting to be dragged into the war on Russia’s side like Lukashenko is being.

It wants to be totally neutral.

Hungary has published a national consultation survey asking citizens to agree or disagree with the government’s opposition to European Union sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. Closing date is December 9th.

https://abouthungary.hu/blog/here-are-the-questions-from-hungarys-next-consultation-on-brussels-failed-sanctions

Hungary has resolutely opposed Ukraine joining NATO since day one. If Russia was ever serious about its fear of NATO expansion, that one fact alone should’ve reassured it - with Hungary providing a permanent veto it was never going to happen.

Orban is caught between a rock and a hard place. He wanted what most people in Ukraine wanted before 2008 - the best Russia could offer but with NATO and the EU onside too. If he leans too far toward Russia, Hungary could very well end up getting kicked out of the clubs that prevent it from getting dragged slowly by Russian agents into a Moscow takeover. On the other side, he wants cheap fossil fuels.

I think that "Hungary Won't Be Bullied" describes it just fine.

Let's see what Hungarians say after December 9.

I wonder if they will let Uke "tourists" vote in the poll.

Pretty sure the EU would, if they had their way.

Why not. Russian tourists and even visiting Russian journalists voted on camera during the bogus referendums in Ukraine.

Sauce for the goose... Russia set the precedent.

The cracks are beginning to start.

No cracks, Hungary was always against Ukraine entry into EU.

The EU is set to step up its military support for Ukraine on Monday by launching a mission to train 15,000 Ukrainian soldiers and providing 500 million euros more for weapons.

Far from having close cultural ties to Russia, Hungary has a historically antagonistic relationship with Russia.

But the Hungarians are practical. They don’t see the wisdom in deliberately picking a fight with Russia and they don’t see the benefits of provoking or prolonging a war against Russia. Accordingly, they will take in Ukrainian refugees. They will permit transit of humanitarian supplies and will send their own humanitarian supplies to Ukraine - but not weapons nor will they provide military aid.

I just wish our political leadership were as level headed and reasonable as the Hungarian government.

Obama was 'reasonable' in 2014 when Putin annexed Crimea doing basically nothing, Obama was also 'reasonable' in 2014 refusing to send weapons to Ukraine when Putin started a 'separatist' war in Ukraine's southeast that went on for two years under his administration. It was Trump that finally sent weapons-javelins to Ukraine. Calling for doing nothing while Putin tried to invade ALL of Ukraine, is not 'level headed' or 'reasonable' at this point, that's why so many Western countries are sending weapons to Ukraine.

Is a country by country list of the vote available somewhere? Or was Hungary the only abstention or “no” vote?

The article does not address any “no” votes, so I am inclined to think there were none, but I’m not 100% certain.

Of course you conveniently ignore the two color revolutions the Deep State orchestrated in Ukraine first, the arming of the Neo Nazis, the discriminatory laws against the use of the Russian language, etc etc. Putin didn’t orchestrate any of that. Look to US Neocons like Victoria Nuland for example to see where this all started.

Hungary is not Ukraine, much as the Uke Nazis think everything is.

And I think you're confusing some Oblast's votes for Independence, with the Ethnic Cleansing and NATO Conquest of Serbian Kosovo.

https://washington.mfa.gov.hu/eng/news/why-is-hungary-blocking-ukraines-nato-accession

https://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/03/world/europe/03nato.html

The other one is... Ukraine itself. Plans for NATO membership were shelved by Ukraine following the 2010 presidential election in which Viktor Yanukovych, who preferred to keep the country non-aligned, was elected President. Poroshenko didn’t resurrect the application.

In 2017, the Rada (under Poroshenko) adopted legislation that describes membership of NATO as a strategic foreign and security policy objective... But with no timetable.

In 2019, a corresponding amendment to Ukraine’s Constitution entered into force but a formal request to join still hadn’t been issued. The Yanukovych status was still in effect.

In 2021 Zelenskyy asked NATO about the accession roadmap. The response was lukewarm. And from December 2021 onwards Ukraine and NATO have restated to Russia on several occasions what would need to happen for a formal application to pass even the preliminary checks.
