You are right. Rubber, oil, steel, scrap metal. All embargoed by FDR

Of course Biden’s move raises the benefits for China of taking over Taiwan. Brilliant.

Your view of history is jaundiced, to put it mildly. Allowing the japs to have oil, rubber, steel and scrap metal would have energized an armed force already designing to take over Asia for its CoProspwrity Sphere where Japan would be the dominate trading partner in Asia.

FDRs actions merely hastened the Japanese need to grab those commodities by force.

[I could be wrong, but I believe FDR imposed some economic rules on Japan which effectively crippled their economy. Just bout 6 months before Pearl Harbor.]

The theory only holds water with people with little or no knowledge of history. The Japanese economy wasn’t crippled. They had the resources of an entire continent at their disposal - China.

They struck because they saw opportunity. Holland and France were occupied. The Japanese had moved to take French Indochina (now Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia) a year before Pearl Harbor. The Brits had their hands full fighting the Germans over the skies of Europe, in the Mediterranean and North Africa. The sleepy US garrison in the PI was underfunded, under-trained and under-supplied, just like their Dutch and British counterparts. Basically, Southeast Asia lay prostrate at their feet. All they had to do was reach out and take it.

Note that the Philippine Islands were scheduled, in 1934, to be given their independence in 1946. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor because they wanted to prevent the US from acting on its promise to protect the Philippines post-independence. They expected the US to concede the territory to Japan much as Russia had conceded Sakhalin and the Kuriles to Japan after Russia lost the Russo-Japanese War in 1905.

The Japanese were wrong about US intent. They expected a limited several month conflict like the Russo-Japanese War. They got a death struggle.

Ultimately, the Japanese had attention deficit disorder*. They hadn’t yet conquered China, but ventured further and further, straining their resources by taking on new enemies. By striking at the US, they added one enemy too many, and bought themselves the ashes of ruined cities similar to those they had inflicted all over the Orient.

* The Mongols, who displayed military skills rivaling Alexander’s, took 60 years to conquer China. The Japanese hadn’t spent 10 years in China, yet got distracted from their incomplete conquest to venture thousands of miles away all the way to Australia.

Another point to note. At the time of Pearl Harbor, the US hadn’t ever fought a multi-year knock down drag out war against a foreign adversary outside of the Americas. WWI was intense, with 100K American dead, but that occurred in the course of just over a year. After WWII, it was clear the US had the resources, patience and grit to endure a war involving almost 500K US dead. And in the Korean War, China lost 800K dead in just under 3 years. So they understand that any attack on US territory could have momentous consequences, up to and including the destruction of the Communist Party. Best to keep it local, like the Korean War, which occurred entirely within the Korean peninsula.

Before you kick a country in the nuts, you should make sure you are not completely dependent upon them for just about EVERYTHING.

What’s truly amazing is that this isn’t front page news since Friday. Hardly anyone knows what we’ve done yet, along with all the possible consequences. Maybe it’s too complicated for the morons in the Media?

My view definitely is jaundiced...

Jaundiced because I was old enough, in 1940 & 1941, to understand what the things my parents & grandparents were saying about the madman in the WH...

Jaundiced because the consequences they predicted came to pass...

Jaundiced because by February of 1942 my Dad was in the Marine Corps and in the South Pacific with the First Marine Division by August 1942 and we would not see him again until January 1946...

I'm jaundiced because 60% of the young guys (17-to-22, mostly drafted into the Navy) from our neighborhood never made it back home...

I'm jaundiced because for four years my brother & I had to live with the grandparents because my mother worked 6x12 in a shipbuilding yard as a welder and she spent long periods in hospitals for many years and died at the age of 57 as a direct result...

I'm jaundiced because there are so many piss-ants in our society who have no true idea of the costs of the sacrifices made to ensure that we would live in a free nation...

I'm jaundiced because it is piss-ants like them who willingly handed over our once-free Nation to the communists and for the past 50 years have been educated to accept the role of serf to the tyrants controlling our country...

Finally, I'm jaundiced because my view has been criticized by someone who may be a piss-ant (I do not know)...

Current WH occupant + things I'm saying about Brandon = good chance of my kids jaundiced in due course.

Crippling China by strangling its access to tech know-how. Sounds like a brilliant idea. Sort of like putting an embargo on Japanese oil supplies, That worked out great too.

Since most of Pfizer’s vaccine was manufactured in China I wonder if they’re going to limit the use of the vaccine facilities as well now probably not

The Applied Material machines that are used to make the chips for one. Very complex machines that China doesn’t have right now, but probably will have their own in a few years.

I saw an article where there is one key chip machine component that uses a mirror made solely by a German company. Sanctions deny China those very extra special mirrors
