Near record share of Portlanders believe city on wrong track, Oregonian/OregonLive poll shows

Nearly three-fourths of Portland voters believe their city is on the wrong track, according to a new poll commissioned by The Oregonian/OregonLive.

Only 13% of Portland voters said the city is headed in the right direction, according to the poll of 600 people conducted by DHM Research from Oct. 5 through Monday.

Residents in the three-county metro area who live outside of Portland were even more sour. Fully 84% said things in the Portland area are on the wrong track, while only 9% said they are headed in the right direction.

Southeast Portland resident Kierstin Buchner, who was among the poll respondents who said the city is on the wrong track, said she is frustrated with the city’s inability to address a sharp rise in homelessness and gun violence.

She said she sees needles and human feces on the sidewalk and garbage piling up near a homeless camp a block from her house and no longer feels safe walking her dog in the neighborhood. When the city has swept nearby camps, they’ve just popped up again a few blocks away, she said. Along with homelessness, she is concerned about the rise in homicides and rampant catalytic converter theft in Portland and finds herself wanting to leave the city where she grew up.

“Clearly, what we’ve been doing isn’t working and the people who have the power to make decisions aren’t making the right decisions,” said Buchner, 48. “I don’t know a single person who isn’t frustrated with the situation in Portland.”

At the risk of Williams telling me my head is up my ass again, I have another observation.

A movie named Bro’s came out. It is a gay romantic comedy (apologies if anyone was eating). It has extremely poor performance at the box office.

A movie called Top Gun came out and smashed it at the box office.

Why does this not appear to be reflected in how Americans vote?

There could be a reason, but it’s pretty weird how lopsided that is and how evenly the vote splits.

I guess we’ll see in November, but if it’s even remotely close, I’m calling shenanigans on the whole voting apparatus.
