NATO will push ahead with long-planned nuclear exercises next week despite rising tensions over the war in Ukraine and President Vladimir Putin’s insistence that he is not bluffing about using all available means to defend Russian territory, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Tuesday.
The exercise, dubbed “Steadfast Noon,” is held annually and usually runs for about one week. It involves fighter jets capable of carrying nuclear warheads but does not involve any live bombs. Conventional jets, and surveillance and refueling aircraft also routinely take part.
Fourteen of the 30 NATO member countries will be involved in the exercise, which was planned before Russia invaded Ukraine in February. The main part of the maneuvers would be held more than 1,000 kilometers (625 miles) from Russia, a NATO official said.
“It would send a very wrong signal if we suddenly now cancelled a routine, long-time planned exercise because of the war in Ukraine. That would be absolutely the wrong signal to send,” Stoltenberg told reporters on the eve of a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels.

We sure as hell didn't do that during the Cold War.
We've gone out of our way to make an enemy out of Russia and to make the war in Ukraine happen. We've asked the Russians to put up with things we would never tolerate.
We would never allow Russia or China to arm Mexico with offensive weapons and set up biolabs with deadly pathogens in them. And, the Russians sure as hell don't have to put up with that in their backyard, especially after we fomented a coup in 2014 and empowered a regime that is vehemently anti-Russian.
Putin has held 2 nuclear exercises since invading Ukraine, one in March and a smaller one in June. I guess I missed all the Putler fan’s outrage over those, or the several times he and his government have threatened to attack the west. So now we’re supposed to cancel an annual training exercise so as not to “threaten” Putin.

Everyone on these Russo-Ukraine War threads knows of your support of Russia. So, of course you would condemn such an exercise.
Because if NATO cancelled it — and it was planned and scheduled before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — it would be seen as weakness, and timidity, and a demonstration of a lack of resolve. Such a demonstration could only encourage Russia, and lead to further aggression. Kudos to NATO for standing up to the Russian bully.

Yes, drills are necessary for maintaining and continuously improving defense. Only a dimwit leftist or the enemy would disagree. We’re many years ahead of Soviet equipment and tactics (including some of the recent moronic modifications to old, Soviet junk designs). Let’s take it further and never stop.

We didn’t make Russia an enemy; Russia has been hostile towards the US, and the West, and opposed to our interests for 100 years. The only time Russia was a “friend” was when it needed the US and Britain during WWII. Russia hated us and Britain prior to June 22, 1941, and only sought any kind of rapprochement because it NEEDED us! Immediately after the war Russia resumed its animosity towards the West.
Russians deserved — and deserve! — better than the tyrants that have ruled over them for myriad generations. Russia has NEVER been free; it has always been a police state. And it has made inroads here in the US over several decades to turn us into a police state, as well.
