Univ of FL greets presidential finalist Ben Sasse with protests, tough questions

GAINESVILLE — Students and faculty at the University of Florida gave U.S. Sen Ben Sasse a raucous welcome to campus Monday, greeting the Nebraska Republican with biting questions and a loud protest as he sought to introduce himself as the school’s likely next president.

Introduced last week as the only finalist for the job, the 50-year-old Sasse faced opposition to his stances against same-sex marriage, his past efforts to do away with tenure and a decision by UF leaders to keep much of the selection process secret.

During the second of three public forums, about 200 student protesters crowded into the lobby of Emerson Alumni Hall and refused to leave, waving signs and chanting “Hey hey, ho ho. Ben Sasse has got to go.”

He said he believes in climate change, unlike other members of his party, but feels innovation can provide the solutions, not the federal government.

Neither crazy liberals nor conservatives like Ben Sasse. Seems he has burned his bridges at both ends. A man without a fan. Richly deserved.

He’ll end up dying his hair, changing his name and moving to a remote island.

Someone likely made it worth the uni’s while to do this.

Who, why, and for how much.

Inquiring minds want to know.

I’m sorry but he like anyone else should be able to get a job he was selected for. These students will be there what...1-4 years and then be gone. He is out of politics and maybe he can make this university a little more open to free speech. This cancelling stuff has got to stop at some point.

Ben Sasse brought this on himself by trying to be “middle of the road”....now he is roadkill.

He'll end up going full-blown Lizard Cheney.

Then the liberals will love him and leave him alone in his new megabucks job.

Surprising that they would hire a milk toast white supremacist.

The last white male college President where I used to teach was one of five finalists for the job. They were all invited to give 15-minute addresses to the faculty as to what they would bring to the college. The other four all talked about intellect, recruitment, research, all the usual stuff (this was in the late 1900s, pre-DEI). He said he had all the government connections to get all the funding we needed. He got the job, of course. (I ended up resigning because of him, but that is a separate issue.)

Sasse has his fingers on all the Fed spigots; that's the only reason the PTB want him there.

Oh really? Trump was elected by the People and he was prevented from doing his job by a demonic cabal. Sasser never lifted a finger to defend his President and the President’s voters

Eff Sasse. He is a back-stabbing coward. I hope fails miserably at his new “job.”

This is the result of letting inmates run the asylum. I’m no fan of sasse but this crap either stops or we lose any open exchange of ideas.

You are probably right....some alumina individual is in the mix....probably offered a million to the university to accept the guy to a two-to-three stint.

I also think the governor knew of the entire plan ahead of time, and will appoint himself into the job (after the mid-term election).

Cornhuskers are different. I come from a long line of ‘em and I don’t know if that’s a good thing. The family history is not without its bumps and bruises, in fact it was pretty desperate and fatal at times. My great grandma was gritty, but she lived out in the frontier in the sod house back when the country was raw and her and her three other siblings were farmed out after their mother committed suicide in the front yard out of sheer desperation wrought from the lonely plains along with the disease. It was hard going for many years.

I bumped into a few nebraskans in the military, a few relatives who had some military experience and time out of the state... or never went back to the state, they seemed okay but the family who remained in the state, they’re different.

Pops enlisted in ‘39 and stayed in for 30yrs, we never went there. The only family member pops really associated with was his oldest brother and they were quite close but even his oldest brother never went there.

I had a colleague who’s from Dayton Ohio, I asked him what it was like to grow up in Dayton and he said, “let me say this it was a okay place to be from.” Emphasis on the word “from.”

I kind of get that same impression about Nebraska in general conversation.

Gainesville is absolutely full of liberals but the Soutern Baptists largely live outside of Gainesville, I grew up in Newberry, FL which is in Alachua County, Newberry at that time was a one stop light religious farming community, despite its growth Newberry is still the same, Gainesville has exploded with liberals, when I was a student at UF about 40,000 students attended I think now it’s over 60,000 students, the entire community is one large development project the amount of construction is off the charts.
