Read "The Guns of August"
“Read ‘The Guns of August.’”
No kidding. Excellent book. I read it in high school in 1965. I couldn’t put it down.
WWI was one of the greatest tragedies in world history; it was so...unnecessary. Bismarck predicted that a great conflagration would come about because of, “Some damn foolishness in the Balkans.”
After the war, some German leaders were discussing the war, and one asked the other, “How did it come to this; how did it begin?” The other replied, “Ah, if we only knew.”
Tragedy is too weak a word when discussing WWI.
