The Spanish didnt slaughter the natives - or only sometimes, and not very much, anyway. Natives were valuable. There was a perpetual labor shortage, as the plagues brought by the “Great Columbian Exchange” ravaged the old Mesoamerican population.
The natives were the serfs, the labor force and productive elements of the encomenderos - those conquistadors given an encomienda, a region committed to their (hopefully) benevolent rule - encomienda literally means a commission, or duty, by implication for the purpose of furthering the welfare of the natives.
