The core problem with any negotiation is Crimea. Russia should be willing to give up the rest of its lands to get out the mess, but it would be politically impossible for Putin to turn over Crimea.

At the same time no Ukrainian government could sign a deal giving up Crimea. They would be overthrown in seconds by the population and the war will continue.

There doesn’t appear to be a desire for peace on the Ukrainian side. They decided against a settlement months ago, and with the west backing them they feel emboldened.

From the Russian point of view, if I understand it, if there is no agreement for peace their terms, the only solution is the continued destruction of Ukraine. They will not stop with a hostile force threatening them, and neither will the Ukrainians.
