CHICAGO — As migrants continue to be bused into the city, advocacy groups that have been working with the undocumented community say the city still has to fill many structural holes to support and sustain not only the new arrivals but also the existing undocumented community.
Since August, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has sent more than 2,500 migrants to Chicago. While city and state leaders initiated a rapid response to situate the migrants, immigration activists and organizations still feel that efforts to shore up social services amount to emergency triage, not long-term solutions.
The city has nearly 829,000 noncitizens who are potentially at risk of deportation, according to 2016 data from the Vera Institute of Justice, a criminal justice nonprofit.
There is still a lack of housing and a complicated, long process for work permits has created an existing class of vulnerable undocumented people who are having to double and triple up in apartments and work illegally.
In August, Chicago became the latest U.S. city to receive bused migrants, following similar arrivals in Washington, D.C., and New York City.
Those cities quickly became overburdened by the surprise inflow from Texas. On Friday, New York Mayor Eric Adams declared a city emergency over the “humanitarian crisis” of thousands of asylum-seekers coming to the city and slammed Texas Gov. Greg Abbott for exacerbating the issue.
Even though Chicago had some time to prepare, there was still “disarray” as buses arrived, said Sylvia Puente, president and CEO of the Latino Policy Forum, a nonprofit that works on public policy for Latinos in Chicago and Illinois.

Shove it, Chicago. Sideways.
over 800,000 non citizens? Chicago has about 2.7 million people, so about 30% are immigrants, legal and illegal??? What the heck? Well, as a sanctuary city, they love this, so why are they having such problems???
That’s unpossible. They barely have enough millions of people to run such a thing. Better to keep them all in small border towns where all the fuel, water, and food need to be imported from far away
Illegals are not likely to survive Chicago, then again most anyone won’t likely survive.
Gee you’d think a sanctuary city such as shitcago would be the cutting edge tip of the spear showing the rest of us how to handle all these ILLEGAL ALIENS.
Why are the “advocates” suddenly concerned about illegals coming in to Chicago?
I’m glad you said it. Just what I was wondering, too.
where are these same “advocates” in conservative border states? (self answering question).
Easy. Send them all on a one-way flight to Guatemala.
LOL.
5.56mm
In other words, Groot wants another $billion$ in Federal grants to distribute to friends and relations, on the pretext of supporting these illegal aliens she advocated for.
Advocates for illegals. Advocates for the homeless. Their real advocacy is for anarchy and the destruction of our country.
Looks like Old Beetlejuice is looking for more free money for her friends.
JUST raise taxes!
Migrants? I guess the term “illegal aliens” is toxic in the media.
DNC table to register them as Dems. Check.
Welfare entitlements signups. Check.
Mail-in ballots (take as many as you want). Check.
Everything looks okay.
New Yawk and Chicago can’t handle an influx of freeloading “refugees” and are whining their asses off about it. Funny they never talked about how tough it was to have this sewerage pumped into states when only red states were getting it pumped into their states. I don’t want to hear about how tough it was for California too. Not quite. California has been inviting in freeloaders for decades.
