U.S. special forces on Thursday conducted an unusual helicopter raid near the village of Qamishli, an area controlled by the Syrian central government, in an apparently successful effort to eliminate an Islamic State weapons smuggler.
A second United States operation in northern Syria less than 24 hours later reportedly killed two more senior ISIS officials.

Killing Islamist terrorists is escalation? Heck, even Slick Willy fired Tomahawks at bin Laden’s base in Afghanistan.
From what base[es] does the US military attack targets in Syria?
More to come. Wag the dog, dopers let off the hook, student loan forgiveness ploys, anything to buy votes for Claudius...next up another “rescue” helicopter cash dump from the treasury I bet
Never expect or assume the military is doing what they say they are doing for the reasons they state when a Democrat/Marxist is President.
It’s bad enough when an Establishment, Globalist GOP President like GWB is in charge, but when a Democrat is in charge, you know they are up to no good!
An Islamic State weapons smuggler certainly sounds like somebody who should be eliminated, yes?
I have a lot of issues of how the Obama Administration backed us into the Syrian Civil War. He staked U.S. credibility to something that is not a core national interest. Biden can’t and won’t try and figure out a long term plan, they’ll just play whack a mole and dump the hard decisions on the next administration.
However killing ISIS leaders harms an organization that is a blood enemy of the American people. They seek to impose their brand of Islam on the globe, so killing these pigs is a good in and of itself.
I thought Syria had ‘sovereign borders’ or something
We’ve had a small presence in eastern Syria since 2015. Not a lot of folks, enough to play whack-a-mole with ISIS and Al Qaeda.
It was stupid to get involved, an Obama Administrations specialty, but no one wants to make hard choices to get out, particularly so soon after tor Afghan debacle.
Its okay when we do it.
I think we still have about 2000 troops on the ground there. Don’t know about equipment. I guess they are supported from bases in Jordan and/or Iraq.
My first thought was about Russia and whether they still have 50,000 troops there. From that POV, Russia is a bit pre-occupied. Then again this type of move is not new for us.
A lot of countries with Islamic crazies. The U.S got into Afghanistan due to Islamic crazies, and then negotiated with islamic crazies to get out. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting a do nothing approach. But at least dispense with this ‘sovereign borders’ crap that gets repeated like a mantra. They don’t exist
Obama is a stooge.
Deep State’s stooge.
Deep State hides behind useful idiots like the POTATUS and Obama.
Biden trying to look tough. Remember, you don’t f*ck with a Biden.
Just trying to distracted voters about inflation problems at home before mid term elections.
I hope this might force Putin to send some of the Wagners from Ukraine back to Syria. The new military head of ALL operations in Ukraine is a real vicious SOB. He is friendly with the vicious head of Wagner, and the vicious head of Chechnia. They are the 3 hardliners with power that Putin has to deal with. There is also a reconstruction of Russian command in Uraguay with one rather than 4 commanders, thus removal of one layer of command and communications delays when trying to run a war in the field.
The situation in Iran is looking more like the protesters might win. A judge is asking for people to talk with him, and for the first time the Revolutionary Guard was not attacking protesters. The oil workers now support them and they were critical to the revolution that overthrew the Shah over 40 years ago. In 5 days we will see if Xi will continue in power. If not, interesting times in China. In fact a lot of interesting times in a lot of places. Similarities to soap operas, but a lot more serious.
In comment #16 I meant Ukraine, NOT Uraguay.
