On nuclear subs the crew cannot haze new crew members - which used to happen to everyone from E2 all the way up to the XO - to find out what they are made of and whether they can be trusted to turn the right valve the right way in a critical situation where everyone's life depends on it. COs were usually left out of it, and good COs joined in on it. And the XO was not exempted because after that tour he was going to be going on to be CO. But that was back when mastery of the Naval Arts was a thing.

I presume that drill sergeants can no longer demand an extra 50 pushups because the scum recruit in front of him just screwed up again by being a scum recruit who needs to prove he can put up punishment to do some extra healthy strength building exercises to make him fit for combat.

The Russians are sadistic when it comes to hazing their recruits. The Americans seem to have found the perfect balance. Or at least before we became woke.
