Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) is expected to retire from his seat in the Senate by the end of the year in order to become the president of the University of Florida.
In a statement posted to Twitter, Sasse said he had been courted by “wonderful institutions” previously, but felt that the University of Florida was unique.
“UF is the most important institution in the nation’s most economically dynamic state. Washington partisanship isn’t going to solve these workforce challenges — new institutions and entrepreneurial communities are going to have to spearhead this work. If UF wants to go big, I’m excited about the wide range of opportunities.”
A source familiar with the situation told The Hill that the Nebraska Republican will likely step down from the upper chamber between mid-November and mid-December, with Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts (R) set to tap his successor.
The governor can fill the seat through 2024. Sasse’s term would’ve lasted through 2026.

And I wonder how much the uni got for hiring this guy.
And from whom...
Why would anyone want to be a senator?
That’s true, but he actually had a decent voting record, and if Ricketts chooses a McConnell type (or worse, a Romney type) Republican, it actually sets us back.
I had that same reaction at first, as well.
Then I looked at his record at Midland University, and I must say, he’s probably about as “conservative” as you’re going to get for a University President, outside of maybe Liberty University.
And he’s out of Washington DC. So I think UF did us a solid.
And it could be worse, it could have been Donna Shalala.
I always gave my friends from Miami hell for that one.
This will make the liberals heads explode in Gainesville, from Sasse’s tenure at Midland University:
“In 2012, it added varsity men’s and women’s shotgun sports.”
All the UF Presidents I can remember were academics, in the recent past they got rid of the “gator bait” cheer, tried to get rid of calling the UF/UGA game the world’s largest outdoor cocktail party, cracked down on on campus tailgating l, so why not let a politician have a shot at it, so long as they don’t meddle with the athletic department I’m good
Sasse was in Academia before becoming a Senator.
And like I said, I’m on board with Sasse now, better Gainesville than Washington DC. I think he’s going to make a lot of liberals’ heads explode there, and frankly there his opinions on Trump won’t really matter anyway.
Well I am maybe a “less knowledgeable” FReeper from NE. And you might be right about several of your suggestions. But The other things is, Sasse would be happy to leave the U.S. Senate, if it meant a bit of a raise for him, IMO. He is just that slimy. He knows he has no future in politics, and I think he is just looking out for himself, and the chance to get a bit more income. I truly don’t believe he fancies himself as trying to position himself to take on RDS. Just my thoughts.
