Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) is expected to retire from his seat in the Senate by the end of the year in order to become the president of the University of Florida.
In a statement posted to Twitter, Sasse said he had been courted by “wonderful institutions” previously, but felt that the University of Florida was unique.
“UF is the most important institution in the nation’s most economically dynamic state. Washington partisanship isn’t going to solve these workforce challenges — new institutions and entrepreneurial communities are going to have to spearhead this work. If UF wants to go big, I’m excited about the wide range of opportunities.”
A source familiar with the situation told The Hill that the Nebraska Republican will likely step down from the upper chamber between mid-November and mid-December, with Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts (R) set to tap his successor.
The governor can fill the seat through 2024. Sasse’s term would’ve lasted through 2026.

“The governor is a Republican, but he’s a wealthy country-club Republican. His family owns the Chicago Cubs. I wonder what kind of senator he’ll appoint. We might wind up missing Sasse.”
If he confers with Mitch McConnell, then yes, the choice may very well be worse than Sasse.
So far. So so far.
Not for UF.
Senator, don’t let the door hit you on your a— as you leave, buh bye.
EXCELLENT!
Hopefully the Governor will appoint someone who is both a real Republican and can win in ‘24.
Walking away from the battlefield.
Was there not a massive grass roots revolt within the GOP party in Nebraska this year which threw out the entire entrenched Rhino party apparatus. I’d thought Gov. Rickets was on the losing side of that. It’s hard to imagine Sasse leaving early without some tie in to that revolt. Since Rickets is to be gone at the end of the year (which I”d forgotten) and likely expected to be replaced by someone more MAGA, mightent this be a move by Sasse, who knows he cannot be re-elected in’26 and doesn’t want to stay unti his end, to substitute a stealthier Rhino —— via Gov Rickets rather than post-Rickets Gov.— and give.them a head start on ‘26. At the same time prepositioning Sasse to snipe at RDS in Fla instead of sniping at Trump. More knowledgeable Freepers from NE need to chime in.
Florida didn’t have anybody worth recruiting? His home state didn’t have a university with his time and attention? Hmmm
The "N" on their helmet stands for "Knowledge".
University of Florida...how far they have fallen. :-(
As Former congresswoman Corinne Not A Graduate Brown has been often been heard to say, Go Gay-duhs!
I’d like to see Herbster get the nod, but that is unlikely.
No Sasse, no Rino ass!
As a Graduate of UF, I’m taking a wait and see approach. Remember the State Legislature is solid majority Republican and the Governor we all know about.
If you think back about FSU they received far more state money during the 90s and early 2000s versus UF because they had some very powerful alumni in state government and were run by John Thrasher who was a powerful state senator before becoming President of FSU, their entire stadium was pretty much built with taxpayer money because they put a few classrooms in there and called it educational, when it was nothing more than a brand new stadium.
If Ben Sasse leaves the athletic department alone and works closely with the Republican legislature and increases the funding for UF then he will be a success.
All the recent UF Presidents have been academics, who struggled with the legislature, perhaps Sasse can turn that around.
UF is the most important institution in the nation’s most economically dynamic state.
Shows us what this puke really thinks of Nebraska.
The problem is there is a civil war underway (which we are winning) within the Republican Party and this turd is firmly on the other side. I detest RINOs even more than I detest the current Democrat Party. The RINOs are their lying weasel-like enablers and 5th columnists who are every bit a part of the Establishment and who work to prevent the real changes in government policy most of us want to see.
True, but Ben Sasse won’t be in government anymore, he will be academia, given who normally runs that area around the country, he would be far right compared to most of them.
Remember the current President of UF led the push to get rid of the Gator Chomp cheer because of its supposed racist history when the cheer was popularized by a black player from Miami.
Yeah, the Gator Bait cheer. That was a pure “hey look at me and my woke bona fides!” move on his part. He had to dig deep to find a lone article from some obscure magazine over 100 years ago that nobody had ever heard of. Obviously, there was no racial angle to the cheer and everybody knew it.
Then again, Carrie Nation Machen tried to get rid of the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party moniker for the FL-GA game because gosh, if you don’t mention boozing then nobody is going to spend the week of the game getting utterly sloshed. No siree! Its all that evil name which causes people to drink that demon rum!
Worthless virtue signaling Idiots. I usually just ignore these mercenaries. They’re not real Gators. They’ll take their paychecks and be gone in a few years. We are real Gators and it will always be our school for all of our lives.
As for Sasse, its not just that I dislike him. Its also that his faction is clearly losing the power struggle within the Republican Party. I doubt as a standard bearer of the losing faction, he is going to have much pull with the Republicans in the legislature or with DeSantis. Its not a bad idea to have a political animal as your school president if he can finagle some goodies out of the state government like Thrasher did for fsu, but if that was the angle here, Sasse is a really poor choice for that. They should have picked somebody who was aligned with the MAGA movement.
Sassed was/is a milquetoast anti-trump dude. Not sure if Pete could choose worse.
Nobody is digging deeper into this story.
Gee, I wonder why...? 🤔
