WASHINGTON — For the first time since the Cuban missile crisis in October 1962, top government leaders in Moscow are making explicit nuclear threats and officials in Washington are gaming out scenarios should President Vladimir Putin decide to use a tactical nuclear weapon to make up for the failings of Russian troops in Ukraine.
In a speech Friday, Putin raised the prospect anew, calling the United States and NATO enemies seeking Russia’s collapse and declaring again that he would use “all available means” to defend Russian territory — which he has now declared includes four provinces of eastern Ukraine.
Putin reminded the world of President Harry S. Truman’s decision to drop atomic weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, 77 years ago, adding, “By the way, they created a precedent.” On Saturday, the strongman leader of the southern Russian republic of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, said Putin should consider using “low-yield nuclear weapons” in Ukraine, becoming the first prominent Russian official to openly call for such a strike.
Senior U.S. officials say they think the chances that Putin would employ a nuclear weapon remain low. They say they have seen no evidence that he is moving any of his nuclear assets, and a recent Pentagon analysis suggests the military benefits would be few. And the cost for Putin — in a furious international response, perhaps even from the Chinese, whose support he needs most — could be tremendous.

And I agree with Medvedev, if Russia uses tactical nukes in Ukraine, there will be no military response from the US/NATO.
Loose lips sink ships.
Paranoia on both sides isn’t a winning combo.
You’re right but why risk our lives for their old man head butting contests? Millions of lives are risked for their ego trips.
The nuclear threat was that if NATO attacks Russia, they will respond and everything is on the table. That’s petty normal, but probably disappointing for DC that has a template for how their war with Russia is supposed to unfold.
“ seeking Russia’s collapse”
That message is for Russian domestic consumption to gin up war support and it isn’t working.
“The nuclear threat was that if NATO attacks Russia...”
I think the idea is he declares parts of Ukraine magically become part of Russia and Ukrainians defending their territory is somehow “attacking Russia”.
Once upon a time we played the Brinksmanship game with Russia and they with us. How hard can we push them or they us and where are the real no shit redlines. When did this become passé and why? Do we think we can just gang the world up against them and they’d have to like it and to hell with their sensibilities or redlines? Yeah they’re thugs. Always were. But they were the Russians and we didn’t have to like them but we had to deal with them and accept that they were part of reality and could do things to make life very bad for a lot of people. If Putin is bluffing in his action in Ukraine, that is, if he hopes to get what he wants with little more than he’s invested we may prevail. But if he was spurred by a real Russian redline Biden et al, are in over their heads and dragging us along.
“And I agree with Medvedev, if Russia uses tactical nukes in Ukraine, there will be no military response from the US/NATO.”
Op-plans have been written, updated, and trained to and standardized for decades. That’s what planners do, and Readiness as well. The Pentagon is full of them. Planners, trainers, readiness through training... beltway bandits are fat with experienced subcontractors. Eisenhower is but a whisper when the winds of war are stirred.
“In Washington, Putin’s Nuclear Threats Stir Growing Alarm”
You mean the Biden aka Sleeping Duty administration is finally believe Putin is not bluffing.
I don’t disagree. I think this situation is incredibly dangerous to the US and the world at large.
IF it came down to Putin “losing” or using nuclear weapons what choice will he make?
Yay, we won the proxy war in the Ukraine and got nuked?
What in the hell are these people thinking? I don’t care which side you are cheering..... I want my children and nation to be safe.
This is crazy and I said it from the beginning.
So then unless NATO attacks that area, there shouldn’t be any problem, right?
That’s how I’ve been interpreting it, too.
“So then unless NATO attacks that area, there shouldn’t be any problem, right?”
No.
It wouldn’t be attacking it would be defending.
Putin is a thug and always has been. And now he wants to use nukes? This guy is beyond nuts. He’s stark raving mad.
If those fat cats in Kremlin, those whom Putin hasn’t killed off value their lives, their nice apartments and dacha’s and all the other perks they’ve amassed for themselves they’d better convince ‘’Comrade Vladimirovich’’ to ‘’retire for health reasons’’.
In October 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis enabled JFK and the Dems to gain seats in the House. Don’t bet that the committee that runs this country hasn’t looked at this as a possible template for this November’s congressional election.
Anybody know where I can get a 1950’s type school desk so I’ll have something to hide under?
You can kiss your a$$ goodbye without one.
Is anyone in Washington alarmed about a POTUS with dementia who is suppose to lead a response or take action before a nuclear attack or are they going to continue pretending Brandon has a clue?
