I've heard the same thing. Is it true? Let's examine. Here is my list of the 12 deadliest wars in history:

1. Mongol Wars: Mongols vs. everybody else, NO
2. World War II: Germany vs. Russia, Japan vs. China, US vs. Germany and Japan, NO
3. Taiping Rebellion: Civil War in China (19th cen), Ruling Manchurians vs. Han Chinese in South, SORT OF
4. Ching-Ming War: Manchurian conquest of Ming China (17th cen), NO
5. World War I: Germans vs. everyone else, NO
6. Lushan Rebellion: Chinese civil war during Tang Dynasty (8th cen), YES
7. Dungan Revolt: Han Chinese vs. Chinese Muslims in West (18th cen), SORT OF
8. Russian Civil War: Bolshevics vs. White Russians, YES
9. Chinese Civil War: Communists vs. Nationalists (20 cen), YES
10. Thirty Years War: Mostly a German civil war between Protestants and Catholics, YES
11. Napoleanic Wars: France vs. everybody, NO
12. Second Congo War: Civil War in Congo, YES
